HearArts Spoken Word and Music event at VisArts in Rockville features Alan King and The HearArts Ensemble this month. This free monthly series of spoken word and music is held on the first Thursday of every month at VisArts in Rockville, MD. Includes refreshments and open mic.

Alan King, an author, poet, and journalist who lives in the DC metropolitan area. He writes about art and domestic issues on his blog. In addition to teaching at Duke Ellington, he’s also the senior program director at the DC Creative Writing Workshop, a Cave Canem fellow and VONA Alum. Alan is currently a Stonecoast MFA candidate, and has been nominated twice for a Best of the Net selection. He is also a Pushcart Prize nominee. Drift (Aquarius Press/Willow Books, 2012) is his first book.

The HearArts Ensemble, led by Charles Tolbert (aka Bliss Ananda), a native Washingtonian and consummate violinist. He co-founded The Sufi Rain Orchestra as well as D.A.T.A. Music Productions, and Dowe Sound Lab recording studios, and has played a key role in the revitalization of the NIH Community Orchestra. A frequent performer on the concert stage, his CDs include JOYTI, Trinity, and Trinity Too. His inspiring music is infused with jazz and an eclectic variety of other musical styles. Charles will be joined in the HearArts Ensemble with several other fixtures of the DC area musical scene.
